Butterfly Tatoos

Mother, you did WHAT???
My mother has a butterfly tatoo.  What am I going to tell the grandkids?  What will the neighbors say?  Has she gone senile?  Is she on something?  Do we need to put her under observation?  She got a butterfly tatoo!  The days of only “drunken sailors” having tatoos are gone.  Be it the modern age, the sexual revolution or as has been said, “you can’t keep ‘em down on the farm forever,” tatoos are here for both sexes and for every age.
Grandma isn’t the only one sporting a butterfly tatoo.  Movie stars, singers and television personalities have them also.  Dolly Parton has a butterfly tatoo on her chest, Julia Roberts on her lower back, Britney Spears on her left foot, and others.

A butterfly is small and delicate yet full of beautiful colors and detail.  A butterfly tatoo often symbolize a rebirth, a new freedom or a new beginning after experiencing difficult times.  The symbolization is both meaningful and culturally individual.  In Russia the word for butterfly is close to the word meaning grandmother.  In China two butterflies together symbolize love.  For some the butterfly is seen as symbolizing today’s modern age while for others it symbolizes peace.  Butterflies have long been used and are very popular within the fashion industry.  Is it any surprise the butterfly tatoo has become the venue of expression among many females today?

Because the butterfly tatoo doesn’t need to be large or striking it can be placed in most locations of the body.  This makes it ideal as a first time tatoo experience.  Being discrete or being bold is left to the owner.  Be aware that often the butterfly tatoo is the first of additional tatoo applications.  More butterfly tatoos or tatoos of other specifications frequently follow.  While tattooing is not addicting, with some it has a habit forming effect.  One has only to visit a gym or watch television to realize the extent to which some of the individuals partake of the tatoo ink.

The butterfly tatoo, while beautiful in its own right, can be and often is joined with flowers, fairies, or vines.  This enhancement can be best displayed on the lower or upper back or on the entire back.  The boldness of the colors and the butterfly itself display and give an indication of the personality of the wearer.  The design being self created or obtained from a magazine provides the viewer an extravaganza of colors and a three dimensional affect achieved by the tatoo artist.  Keep in mind however, that choosing the design, choosing the tatoo artist and choosing the placement of the tatoo should be approached with care and caution.  The tatoo will be with you for a life time.  Take the time to plans its creation.
Butterfly tatoos are considered to be the most versatile of tatoo images.  Perhaps this explains its popularity among women.  They are thought to be feminine but not girlish.  They can make a bold statement yet be very subtle.  This leads one to prophesize that we will be seeing more butterfly tatoos in the times ahead.
